Conspiracy theories — they’re fun. Malicious people secretly manipulating events — I use them in my own fiction because they’re nifty and intriguing.
But there’s a big problem with them in real life.
Now, there have been a lot of popular conspiracy theories through the years, such as the moon landing being faked, 9/11 being an inside job, and, of course, space aliens being covered up. A more recent popular conspiracy theory is that the 2020 election was stolen, with the Democrats manipulating the vote in multiple states (six, maybe?).
Now, I’m a simple man. I’ll believe about anything one can prove beyond a reasonable doubt, i.e., prove in a court of law. And many, including Trump himself, seem quite convinced that any reasonable person should believe the election was stolen, which seems to suggest that such evidence exists. In fact, Trump has quite recently said he was about to release such evidence (though then didn’t release the evidence on the advice of his lawyers).
But I’m 99.9% certain no such evidence exists because I have a simple rule of thumb that says such a conspiracy is impossible. There’s one thing you would have to convince me of to make the stealing of that election even slightly plausible in my mind.
