I can think of a few people for whom that outside forces wedge is bigger, usually due to either cancer or some other medical condition. There are also people who have had some tragedy beyond their control. Usually the "life sucks" phase isn't permanent, but for some it is. Overall, these are the people I'm glad to help out, financially or otherwise, when they need it.
Fortunately, for most people this isn't the case and it's all their fault.
