This Is Alarming

I want you to look at this graph:

Now, that’s pretty stark. There’s a lot of talk of correlation versus causation, but I think when you see things shoot up that quickly, you know something is going on here. I mean, I assume the bottom axis was supposed to be time, though it could be something else. But whatever it is, things are moving up quickly in reaction to it.

Frankly, I find this alarming. Now, not having the labels for the y axis, I can’t be certain that what is growing exponentially isn’t a good thing, but the red color makes me think this is probably bad. How bad? Well, we have those numbers there — though it’s hard to know if those are relatively big numbers or small numbers without knowing what it is referring to. And, those could be millions — like at the end it might be going up over 600 million… something.

Should we panic? Well, it’s hard to ignore this data even if we don’t know what it refers to. Still, I’d take a deep breath and proceed with caution. If knowing is half the battle, I feel like we’ve done 3% of the battle here. Whatever that battle is.
