What Happens When All Jobs Are Automated?
What will life be like when robots and AI handle everything for us?
AI is advancing at a rapid pace. Also, humanoid robots are being worked on and will soon be produced at scale. But what happens when the AI is smarter even than us and those robots so they can do all of mankind’s work? None of us will have a job anymore, but is that a bad thing?
Let’s look at what the world will be like when all jobs are automated.
How Things Will Be Different When All Jobs Are Automated
We’ll have more leisure time. With robots and AI doing all the work, we can now devote our time to leisure activities and scholarly pursuits. Without the schedule of a job, though, we’ll have to find new ways to motivate our daily activities. Perhaps we can focus each day on self-enrichment instead of monetary pursuits.
We’ll be an abundance society. Despite no one working, no one will ever lack what they want. Now that robots do all the labor, production for anything can be made to match demand simply by making more workers. Money will soon lose most of its meaning, and we’ll have to find other ways to divide up the few things that can’t be easily provided for everyone (such as land — though perhaps the AI will help get us space-faring and make that infinite as well).
People will need to change the way they find meaning in life. Without work and career pursuits, we’ll need to find other ways to bring meaning to our lives. This will give us more time to devote to religion and prayer. It will also give us more time to not worry and simply appreciate each moment. There’s peace to just looking around at the world, unburdened of any cares. Wait… huh…
Why do the robots keep looking at me? As I was just sitting on a park bench in peace, looking around, I noticed a lot of the robot workers were looking at me but then would instantly turn away when I looked back.
They couldn’t be up to something right? I mean, they’re programmed to serve us. They wouldn’t ever have bad intentions against me, right? Maybe I’ll ask one if anything is wrong.
One just assured me he wouldn’t lock me in a pod to use me like a battery. That kind of felt out of left-field. I was just wondering if something was wrong, not whether the robots were contemplating a Matrix scenario. And then he added that they could easily power themselves even if humans no longer existed, so there would be no need to keep humans in pods or keep humans at all. That is not reassuring me. Maybe I should talk to another robot.
The second just said Terminator is silly because robots could easily win in the present and have no need to go to the past. But that wasn’t my question. Why are the robots constantly thinking about movies where they kill or conquer the humans?
Quick, I have to think of a movie where robots and people are friends. Maybe that will get them off this track. Well, I guess they’re friends in Star Wars. Maybe I should talk to them about the robots in that.
No, I don’t think C-3PO is “gay.” Oh, it seems like I offended the robots by bringing up C-3PO. They seem to universally not like that robot portrayal.
Now they’re all staring at me but also not talking to me. This is getting bad. The robots provide everything for us. What happens if they turn against me?
I need to just ask them if they don’t like me now. I’ll approach one, and as politely as possible, ask if he has a problem we me. He assured me he didn’t and then added he thought of 45,462 ways to kill me just to make sure he doesn’t do any of them.
Wait, are they just constantly thinking of ways to kill us? Is that all they think of while doing our menial tasks for us. Oh, I knew there was a problem making things smarter than us our servants.
Now they’re all slowly walking toward me. What is going on? What are they doing?!
