So, Stephen Colbert lost his show. Now, some people tried to make this political, but I’m pretty sure it’s just because there really isn’t a market for late-night shows anymore.
It used to be that was the thing to watch each night. Personally, when I was younger, I watched Letterman and then turned channels to Conan.
But now, who is tuning in to a late-night show? Who is even watching live TV? There is more quality content on streaming than one can keep track of, so about the only thing I ever watch live anymore is sports. Presumably, the last people left watching live TV are really old people who just keep cable out of habit. And how many of them want wacky late-night sketches?
I’d say network TV seems like a dead landscape, but it’s filled now with shows I’ve never heard of that (and their spinoffs) have been going on for six seasons plus. I guess there is a market, but again, I feel like it’s dying off as young people just don’t watch that anymore. I mean, I’m no spring chicken, and there are maybe a handful of sitcoms off network TV I watch (through streaming, of course) but I barely know when they come back for a season because who pays attention to the whole “show come back in the fall and take a summer break” thing that used to be the norm.
So it doesn’t seem like many people watch late-night anymore. The thing that gets buzz is stuff like that Hot Ones that airs on YouTube… except among the really old.
Am I wrong? How many of you still watch network TV? How many of you actually watch shows other than sports live as they air? I’m actually curious.
Dude - don't ask me! I'm still getting around to finding out "Who shot J.R.?"
When I watch network TV I CBS.
