As I talked about recently, there are a lot of countries out there. Many of them prop up kings and dictators and try to act self-important, but they just suck.
America is supposed to be different, though. We’re not some plot of land and idiots trying to pretend we’re important — we really are great and different.
And that’s why worrying about flag burning really annoys me.
It just feels so… weak.
We’re this powerful nation built on eternal ideas of liberty that have made us the greatest, richest nation ever, and it feels so insecure to worry that someone defacing a symbol like that does anything of harm to us. I can see Russia getting all worked up about it, as they’re constantly so worried about their waning prestige. I can see China worried about such a thing — you see how Xi cracks down on anyone depicting him as Pooh Bear because he knows his power is an illusion and he can’t have people poking holes in it.
But we are the greatest, most powerful nation. It’s not just a pose. That means someone can burn our flag and make fun of our leaders (we make fun of our leaders), and who gives a rat’s ass. It does no harm to us. And to act worried about it just shows weakness. This is not a country for weakness.
Not only can’t the burning of a symbol of America cause us any harm, but even nukes can not destroy America. Because we are a country founded on a great idea of freedom, liberty, and equality. These ideas cannot be destroyed by any physical means — least of all fire on some piece of cloth. So let other countries pretend to be important and protect their symbols and walk around in special clothes and fancy hats like primitive people of old. As Americans, we need to embrace our strength and stop caring about silly things other pathetic nations obsess over.
Burning an American flag makes a fool of whoever does it. But it does nothing to us.
Flag burning is what Republicans talk about when they don't want to talk about anything that matters.
